Whether you're an HTML aficionado or still have trouble with copy and paste, Cvent can help you design a gorgeous survey that matches your organization's look and feel.

In Surveys (Classic)

1 Access the Display Options page. Begin by selecting your survey. Click Design Survey in the blue navigation bar. Under Section Links on the left, click Display Options.

2 Choose a template and how you want to customize it. Click Edit.

Find the best template for you by searching the box on the right. Click it, then select how to modify it with the options under "What settings do you want to use?"

Your choices include:

  • Use the defaults
  • Customize the color and fonts - Change the font and size of each field with the dropdown. Modify a color by entering a hex value or clicking the User-added image next to the appropriate field. Use the radio buttons marked below to change the alignment of your questions.

  • Customize the CSS - Unless you're familiar with CSS, this option is not recommended. Adjust the code as necessary.
NOTE: Horrified by what you've done? Click Restore to Default Settings to undo all your changes.
3 Modify the buttons, if necessary. Scroll down to the Button Options section. Enter new labels in the appropriate text fields. Use the Button Style dropdown to change the look of your buttons.

4 Change the display options, if necessary. Scroll down to the Other Display Options section. Use the radio buttons to add or remove a title, chapter names, question numbers, cancel and previous buttons, and the asterisks that appear for required questions. You can also add a progress indicator bar that will display how much of the survey the respondent has completed.

Once you're done, click Save.

In Surveys (New)

1 Access the Survey Designer. Begin by selecting your survey. Hover over Design and, under Customize, click Survey Pages.

2 Add a header. In the top left corner of the canvas, click the dropdown, and in the Header & Footer section, click Default Header & Footer. It will appear on the canvas.

Hover over the Header widget, and click the orange section.
To the right of the canvas, hover over Background Image, and click Replace. Open a folder from the Media Library, then select an image. The background image should be about 1920px wide. Instead of specifying a image height, ensure Scale to Fit and Horizontally are selected to keep the image's proportions. Scale to Fit scales the image so that it covers the area being viewed. This often prevents users from needing to scroll to view the image and provides a smoother browsing experience. However, you should select Fixed Background instead if you do not want the complete image to be visible and prefer the image to remain static on the page.

NOTE: Avoid using background images with static text directly on them. Instead, select a design-only image and use widgets to add your text on top.

Need to space things out? Click Customize, then Widget. Scroll down to the Spacing section and use the sliders.

Once you're done, click Save to preserve the draft, or click Publish to make it visible to respondents.

3 Customize the theme. Instead of individually editing each widget to create a cohesive survey, customizing the global theme section of the survey designer will allow the changes to be applied across your whole survey.

Click Theme to the right of the canvas. Click Change Theme to determine the basic design of your survey.

NOTE: The available themes' colors and fonts can be customized, but they currently align with WCAG for 508 compliance.

4 Customize the colors, if necessary. To customize the theme colors, click Colors to the right of the canvas. The first three make up your background colors, while the last two are your text. Notice that the first three contrast with the last two. This has to do with being 508 compliant and aligning with WCAG. If changing the colors to match some of your branding, it's best to pick similar colors, keeping the background light and the text dark, or vise versa.

To change the color, click the textbox and enter a HEX value, or select a color from the color picker.

5 Set the dimensions. Click Dimensions.

The website layout width stretches your sections to fit the length of the screen. We recommend that you check Fit to Entire Screen.

The website content width determines the width of your widgets within the sections. It is recommended that you do not check Fit Content to Full Width, as this can stretch your widgets out. Instead, we suggest setting the "Max." to at least 1024 to ensure your images fill the screen without stretching it.

6 Customize the text styling options. Click one of the elements from the Text Styling section. Here you can choose how the text, background image, background, border, and spacing display.

7 Add content widgets. Now it's time to add content to your section. Drag and drop a widget onto the canvas.

Use the section to the right of the canvas to make any updates to the widget.

NOTE: If adding a new line of text in a text box field, you will need to hold down the Shift and Enter buttons on your keyboard at the same time to ensure single-line spacing. Pressing Enter only will add additional spacing.

Once you're done, click Save to preserve the draft, or click Publish to make it visible to invitees.
